The Facts In Texas:

According to the 2017 State of Girls data, Texas state is ranked 42nd in the nation when it comes to factors that affect the well-being of girls.

Texas’ number of girls ages 5-17 living in poverty being 5% higher than the national average.

From 2007 to 2012, the number of girls ages 6-17 who exercise less than four days per week decreased 11%.

More girls in Texas have emotional, behavioral, and developmental issues than a decade ago and more girls are living in poverty and in single-parent families (an adverse childhood experience that factors into other risky behavior) than 10 years ago.

I don’t know about you but these statistics are UNACCEPTABLE to me. As a female born and raised in Texas these numbers, not only shock me, but they appall me. And something must be done NOW.

Today I am proud to join the Girl Scouts in celebrating the International Day of the Girl. This day was started by the United Nations with a mission “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.” This day is dedicated to the uniting of activists for the common goal of highlighting, discussing and activating to advance rights and opportunities for girls throughout the world. And there is no better an organization than the Girl Scouts that strives to make EVERY DAY the Day of the Girl.

Being a Girl Scout in my youth played tremendously in to who I am today. From teaching me social and life skills, responsibility, confidence, leadership, character and more – it truly was invaluable.

And today there are so many girls in our society who do not have the funds or opportunity to participate in this amazing organization that truly provides the solution to so many of these statistics. Please take a moment today and stand with me and the Girl Scouts for The Day of the Girl and take action by assisting other girls in being Girl Scouts.
