Dear Luke,
I wish I had the words. The words to tell you how much you mean to me. The words to explain the roller coaster of emotions I’m going through with this birthday milestone. Five. How is it possible that you are already five years old? This is the year that you begin to spread your wings and learn even more independence as you go in to Kindergarten. This is the year that you begin to face the world and all that it entails – new friends, “big boy” school, teachers, sports and more. No matter how hard I try to hold you close and cherish every second I continue to feel them rushing past me.
I am so proud of you. I wish I could explain how beautiful you are in and out. Each day you teach Daddy and I so much. You are everything good in this life. There is a song that both of us love called, “Three Year Old,” by Eric Church. I thought it would be perfect for this letter to include some things that you have taught us in your precious five years that we are so grateful for. This is YOUR song my love. Written from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you, Luke, for making me a mommy. I love you and wish you the happiest of birthdays.
Five-Year-Old (Luke’s Rendition)
There’s a dinosaur buried in our backyard.
Hunting bones is fun but you sure gotta work hard.
Aggie puppies are needed in bed to hold.
I learned that from a five-year-old.
…
Having a picnic is the best way to eat.
But make sure that it’s a PBJ or Daddy meat.
Always make time for a family cuddle
or a hand to hold.
I learned that from a five-year-old.
…
God and Jesus made us all.
Watch out or Baby Duplo will make it fall.
“Love you more than one hundred” all day long.
And singing “shooting star” is the best song.
I learned that from a five-year-old.
…
It’s always a home run at t-ball.
And Jack the deer guards you from the wall.
Old blanket will keep you warm.
And Daddy ‘tects us all from harm.
I learned that from a five-year-old.
…
God and Jesus made us all.
Watch out or Baby Duplo will make it fall.
“Love you more than one hundred” all day long.
And “shooting star” is the best song.
I learned that from a five-year-old.
…
The color red was your favorite from the start.
And nothing is bigger than your heart.
Repeat the prayer after me and bedtime stories every night.
Race cars, monster trucks – don’t forget to leave on the closet light.
I learned that from a five-year-old.
Yes, I learned that from my five-year-old.
