Q&A With Candace Schaddellee:

Why did you decide to go into photography?

I first fell in love with photography after my son, Ezra, was born. I would take so many pictures of him! Then I started getting interested in the art and technical aspect of it all. It was through Ezra that I really fell in love with the art of photography, in particular portraiture, and began investing in my craft. I have yet to put the camera down since!

What is your favorite subject to photograph?

I love both couples photography and travel photography. I love couples because I love capturing people interacting with each other, and couples (families too, for that matter) do this so well. Travel is an easy favorite, because I love being in new places and seeing incredible landscapes and cultures that I never get to see here in Texas.

Who are some other photographers that you admire?

I would have to say Jasmine Star, for one. She has really made herself successful in a very competitive field, and I admire her passion and tenacity. As for style of photography, I really love this photographer named Sami Jo, who lives in Utah. The colors she captures on camera are so dreamy. Last one, but I really love Brandon Stanton, who started Humans of New York. He captures the heart of people through photos brilliantly.

What does the expression, “A picture is worth a 1000 words” mean to you?

Pictures tap into our emotions in a way that sometimes words can’t (not to hate on words, I do love books). For me, pictures are about nostalgia, which is why I chose “Rememory” as a business title. My favorite photos, and I think the favorite photos of my clients, are the ones that accurately represent the moments they love, the ones that survive only in pictures and in their memories.

What is your favorite photograph you have ever taken?

Oh goodness, I have so many favorites. So I will have to go with the first one that popped into mind, and that is one I took of Ezra a couple years ago:

This photo is candid, un-staged, and taken at a small park in the apartment complex our little family used to live in. So much of being a photographer is just waiting for great moments, and being prepared to capture them in an artistic way.

How would you describe your photography style?

Probably a mix of things. I like to think of my approach as photojournalistic and candid, but I do pose people as well. I love the vintage look, and have been working to keep a balance between a clean style in my photographs, with vintage colors.

What do you enjoy most about being a photographer?

I love that I have the opportunity to do what I love every single day. I love that my hard work is rewarding, and I visually get to see the fruits of my labor through each new photograph I take. And maybe most of all, I love that I get to interact with so many new people that I would otherwise never get the chance to meet! I don’t think I could ever see myself doing anything else.
