In my opinion, Adam Levine had it right by tweeting, “The VMA’s. One day a year when MTV pretends to still care about music.” But unlike Levine who is refusing to watch, I’m a sucker for award shows and wouldn’t miss it.

MTV tried to mix it up and pretend they are different by rolling out the BLACK carpet this year. The pre-show was pretty much pointless with very few interviews with a-list celebrities. But the biggest news that was announced on the black carpet was – BEYONCE’S PREGNANT! And looking gorgeous!

The VMA’s did one of the smartest things they have ever done in history – they didn’t have a host! We were spared the uncomfortable comedy routines, corny singing and could just get straight to the performances and awards.

The show opened with the facinating Lady Gaga in drag as a cigarette-smoking greaser performing “You and I”. Goodness knows she has to do something weird. I’m starting to think it would be more shocking if she just sat down and sang. I loved when the cameras flashed to the audience who all looked either shocked or confused. Especially Adele who had a big question mark written all over her face.

The fashions were pretty boring this year and definitely leaning towards rocker chic with hints of glitter. Here are some of my faves:

Zoe Saldana wearing Barbara Bui.

Selena Gomez wearing Julien MacDonald.

And, of course, here are the crazies:

Katy Perry in Atelier Versace Fall 2011 mini dress.

Nicki Minaj wearing an entire toy store.

A couple other random notes:

  • Why in the world did someone in the Foo Fighters bring their kid?
  • Did anyone see the random dude that walked on stage during Jay-Z and Kanye’s performance and was quickly taken off stage?
  • If I heard anything else about Jersey Shore I was going to puke.
  • Love the Beavis and Butthead commercial!
  • Britney wins an award, walks up on stage and… announces Beyonce? Odd.
  • I want a dancing hamster (Google to see what I’m talking about).
  • Best Performance definitely goes to Adele!
  • Lil’ Wayne had the most bleeped performance ever.
  • Overall – I was pretty underwhelmed.

What was your favorite part about the VMAs this year?
